How does fiber optics guide missiles?

I know that EFOGM is a system that uses fiber optics to guide missiles, but how exactly are the fibers used to guide? Also, is it in use today?

1. fly-by-wire systems are set up a little different not using fiber optics but strands of wires ,for fiber optics is fragile and easy to break,and you bet fiber optics is still being used. the all popular telephone pole will be no more. and most of American communication will transfer over to fiber optics systems in the near future
2. An optical fiber can carry a lot of data. The data would be used to adjust the flight path of the missile. The fiber could also carry video from the missile back to the control station. i have no idea of its current use.
