Does anyone know how a magnifying glass works?

Does anyone know how a magnifying glass works? I am thninking about relationship between distance, focal point etc. Our book says something about the magnification being upside down if the distance is more than two focal points. Cant figure this out. Please explain any terminology u use it in ur answer.
